Sharon brings extensive training and experience in medicine to her practice as a barrister.  Sharon trained as a nurse at the Royal Children’s Hospital.  She subsequently graduated in first place in medicine at the University of Melbourne and was awarded the A.H. Wall Prize as best intern at the Royal Melbourne Hospital.  She undertook training in paediatrics and clinical genetics at the Royal Children’s Hospital, The Institute for Medical Genetics in Cardiff, Wales and Genetic Health Services Victoria.Sharon was a National Health and Medical Research Council Scholar whilst undertaking doctoral studies at the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research in Melbourne.  Her PhD is in molecular neurogenetics, dealing with molecules that act as an ‘address’ for the connection of developing brain and spinal cord cells.  She became a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians and continues to lecture in genetics and deafness at the School of Audiology at the University of Melbourne.Sharon undertook the Juris Doctor at the Faculty of Law at the University of Melbourne.  As a committee member of the Health Law Committee, Law Institute of Victoria, Sharon contributed to the Law Institute’s response to the Discussion Paper 66 regarding the Protection of Human Genetic Information.  Sharon has published the articles in law in relation to the duty to warn of genetic harm in breach of patient confidentiality ((2004) 12(2) Journal of Law and Medicine 235) and in relation to Cattanach v Melchior on ‘Wrongful Birth in the High Court’ ((2004) Administrative Law and Human Rights Section of the Law Institute of Victoria Newsletter July 2004, 18)Since signing the Bar Roll in 2004, Sharon has appeared in common law personal injury matters in the Coroners Court of Victoria, the County Court of Victoria, the Supreme Court of Victoria (and Court of Appeal) and the High Court of Australia.  Sharon has an active interest in all areas of health law.
